Iconic Astronaut, Former US Senator John Glenn Dies at 95

John Herschel Glenn, one of the most prominent astronauts in American history and a four-term US senator in Ohio, died Thursday in a hospital in Columbus, his family said.

 He was 95 years old.

Glenn was admitted to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center last week and spent several days undergoing treatment. He died Thursday afternoon.

"John Glenn is, and will always be, the hero of the ultimate hometown of Ohio, and his death today is an opportunity for all of us to grieve," said Ohio Governor John R. Kasich . "As we bow our heads and share our grief with her beloved wife, Annie, we must also turn to the heavens, salute her remarkable journeys and her long years of service to our state and our nation.
