The Rangers are Enugu Premier League Champions - By Phil Oscarson

A historic development has occurred that will undoubtedly shape the landscape of Nigerian football. For the 1st time in 32 years, the Enugu Rangers International FC are champions of the Nigerian Professional Football League. In the game that led up to the clincher, Rangers International clinched the championship with a 2-1 victory over Ikorodu United two weeks ago. In that game, the goalscoring occurred in the 1st half courtesy of Obinna Nwobodo and Chisom Egbuchulam. Nwobodo's goal was a solid strike that beat the keeper and propelled the momentum for the Flying Antelopes.

On Sunday, Enugu Rangers International FC clinched the championship with a 4-0 beatdown of the El- Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri. This was their largest victory of the season. Chisom Egbuchulam netted a hat trick and Osas Okoro added a goal to seal the deal. The Enugu Rangers International FC amassed a total of 63 points in 38 games to finish 1st of 19 Nigerian Professional Football League clubs.

This championship run by Rangers International was powered by their incredible win-loss record at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium throughout the season. In eighteen home matches, the Rangers International posted an undefeated record of 15 wins, three draws and zero losses. When the Flying Antelopes played at home this season, they scored thirty-six goals while allowing their opponents to score just nine. The Rangers International of Enugu scored 48 of their 63 points while playing at home.

The club was recognized by Unmissable Incentives Limited for winning the league championship. Unmissable Incentives Limited are the organizers of the Nigerian Sports award. One can believe that the Enugu Rangers International FC will be a prime candidate for "Team of the Year" in the Nigerian Sports award.

With this league win, the Rangers International of Enugu clinched their seventh Nigerian Professional league championship in franchise history. They are back to their winning ways that primarily occurred during the 1970s and 1980s. The franchise won the NPFL three times during the 1970s and they also won three times during the 1980s.

In addition, the club won the Nigerian FA Cup five times in franchise history. All of their FA Cup victories took place during the 1970s and 1980s. As a result of their win, the country will represent their nation at the CAF Champions League for the third time in franchise history next season. 5Dimes Sportsbook reviews and other sports betting sites are expecting great things from the Rangers this year.

Matthew Etim had a tremendous campaign as he was the perfect brew of defense and offense for the Enugu Rangers. He played a pivotal role in their success. Chisom Egbuchulam was another key player. In addition to his championship-clinching hat trick, he paced the club with scoring throughout the season. He was named player of the month in March by the League Bloggers Awards.

There is no reason to believe that the Enugu Rangers do not have a shot of winning the Nigerian Professional Football league again next year. However, every champion of any sport will have a bigger target on their back by their opponents next season. It won't be easy. First of all, the Enugu Rangers will have to improve their play away from Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium next season. The Enugu Rangers had a record of 3 wins, 6 draws and 9 losses on the road last season. They were outscored by their opponents 28-17. It will be hard for the Enugu Rangers to duplicate their incredible home record. If the Enugu Rangers can improve their play away from home, they could be serious contenders to win the NPFL again.
